New Federalism by President Ronald Reagan.
May 13th, 2012
Yet another movement calling itself “Federalism” appeared within the late 20th century and early 21st century . New Federalism, which is characterized by a gradual return of power to the states, was initiated by President Ronald Reagan (1981-1989) with his “devolution revolution” in the early 1980s and lasted until 2001. Previously, the federal government had granted money to the states categorically, limiting the states to use this funding for specific programs.
Reagan’s administration, having said that, introduced a practice of giving block grants, freeing state governments to invest the funds at their own discretion. New Federalism is sometimes known as “states’ rights”, even though its proponents ordinarily eschew the latter term mainly because of its associations with Jim Crow and segregation.
Unlike the states’ rights movement of the mid-20th century which centered around the civil rights movement, the modern federalist movement is concerned far more with expansive interpretations of the Commerce Clause, as inside the areas of health marijuana (Gonzales v. Raich), partial birth abortion (Gonzales v. Carhart), gun possession (United States v. Lopez), federal police powers (United States v. Morrison, which struck down portions of the Violence Against Ladies Act), or agriculture (Wickard v. Filburn). President Bill Clinton (1993-2001) embraced this philosophy, and President George W. Bush (2001-2009) appeared to support it at the time of his inauguration.

No, Sister Dianna, history is not taught in US classrooms anymore. A sort of patriotic mythology is ingrained instead. And the president who was the 2nd biggest promoter of torture after GW Bush, Ronald Reagan, is now ranked by much of the public as being the greatest president in US history. Wish it weren't true, but the US public isn't on the same planet as the rest of the world.
oh I guess you mean how reagan “cut and ran” after 200+ marines were slaughtered in lebanon? do you you mean the “prosperity” that manifested itself in the S and L and housing scandals?(and subsequent bailouts) or the “freedom” embodied by reagan era draconian “war on drugs” laws that disproportionally punished minorities? as far as the opinion abroad, “respect” is not exactly the word that comes to mind.
RT ppl keep saying something about obama, maybe ya’ll didn’t pay attention in school…PRESIDENT… (cont)
Ronald Reagan makes me proud to be an American, the only shame is that my children will never get to experience a President like him.
wow, that's a tough assignment. Looks like you'll have to study federalism and "draw" your own conclusions…
Support the President.
Stop with the silly outdated right wing insanity.
Stop being conservative.
Go register as a Democrat.
Be more Liberal.
And let's fix this country correctly.
You had your chance. Now you see how bad your ideology is.
The American people are the priority.
All of them.

Reagan issued an executive order in 1987 that was related to the idea of new federalism.
As I understand it, new federalism is more of a philosphy rather than a single act or order that was passed. It is a philosophy that Nixon and Reagan in particular pushed. The idea was to limit Federal government authority to interfere in the states' issues. It is sort of the opposite as the FDR's new deal philosophy of federal government involvement into states' affairs.
Didnt you spend several money for other countries? Cmon dont be a hypocrite Obama and stop blaming others has their ever been a president elected in a PERFECT time to be president? Just do your job till the next election where you lose.
NAFTA wasn't Clinton's idea.
It wasn't Clinton's policy.
NAFTA was a Reagan era policy and was hammered out until it was finally completed during Clinton's Watch.
Reagan sugested the thing in 1979 with his speech declaring his candidacy. You can find it online at the Reagan online library. He called it the North American Accord.

Ron Paul is still my first choice but I was really impressed by Thompson at the SC debate. I don't agree with him on foreign policy but he may be the best hope we've got at keeping an open borders liberal like McCain or Huckabee out of the White House. Plus, he seems to be the only “top tier” candidate with any depth or understanding of important concepts like federalism.

Federalism is when the federal government shares governing powers with the states. Southern states didn't like the north telling them what to do regarding slavery, but they also didn't appreciate the fact that the north was imposing tariffs on the goods they sold to the south. That's what started the civil war.
We Love You Our President ..HE IS OURS, I can't believe that….God bless you and God bless your family.
Phoenix you need to go back to high school and learn actual American history. You’ve believed right wing garb for to long. The guy your party idolizes was a blundering fool with his domestic policy and his foreign policy almost led to nuclear war in the first few years of his term. He was more detached from the day to day operations of the Presidency than Dwight Eisenhower. Ronald Reagan couldn’t solve a jigsaw puzzle nonetheless the U.S. economy.
In case you don't know, Ronald Reagan is a champion to conservatives. They ALL invoke his name too much for my taste.
I was 9 years old when I first remember Ronald Reagan. I decided then I was a conservative. Some of us were completed transformed by the man.
I'm a Romney supporter and if this is the best you can come up with, you need to go back to the drawing board.
Shit ain’t been the same since Ronald Reagan held Plymouth Rock!
His Administration understood that Muslim Arabs are vehemently against western troops on Muslim soil. Reagan diminished U.S. forces around the Middle East to foster better relations in the Islamic world. His successor, George H.W. Bush, built up military forces for the Gulf War, then left those military bases open when the war was over, infuriating Muslims. Bill Clinton also maintained those bases, sited by Osama bin Laden as the primary reason for his 1996 Fatwa to kill Americans. After 9/11, George W. Bush closed the Saudi bases.

Words of wisdom from Ronnie Reagan- a self made oxymoron if there ever was one….
I lived through, and remember well the Reagan era. Reagan was the best POTUS we had in the 20th Century. I sat and watched this program with utter disgust at the half-truths, and out right lies that were told. Reagan, and his son who appears in this “documentary” were never on good terms, and it is however a surprise that he spoke so ill of his father. This program is nothing more than a Left-wing hit piece, and hanging htem by their thumbs is much better than the alternative.
